As the mom of a daughter from China, I am grateful for Mulan.
Lydia loves that there is a princess who looks like her.
Of course, I love that Mulan is not only a princess, but also one tough cookie!
I struggle with letting her get caught up in the princess thing...
but, it's kind of like boys and guns.
You can refuse to buy them, but eventually, they'll most likely make one out of legos.
I've decided if she's going to play with the princesses, then I am going to be grateful for Mulan.

She doesn't just have a pretty outer shell.
She's smart and creative and inventive and brave.
These are all the things we want Lydia to know about herself.

It is kind of inevitable, exactly like boys and guns. Having red hair, I was always grateful for Bell in "The Little Mermaid."
ReplyDeleteMulan is my little GA peach's favorite, too:). I think there are some really great traits in some of the princesses. Cinderella does amaze me with her hard work in a difficult and unfair situation! There are, of course, some issues we have to talk through with some of the movies, but you know, it is nice to celebrate the beauty and strength of being a true lady. My Grandma never retired, yet she had Grandaddy start her car every single morning:).
ReplyDeleteDoes Lydia still know any Chinese? Did you know that Richard minored in it and it is his language in the Army and Hanson Ellis adores it and studies it in school. Hence her love for Mulan:).
~*So sweet!! ;)~*Rachel
ReplyDeleteYou are correct about the princess / gun thing! My daughter has sadly outgrown the princesses. But I can still get her to watch the movies and 'Mulan' is one of the best!
ReplyDeleteMulan rocks!!
ReplyDeletexo,
LuLu
such a wonderful way to look at it. Thank you! I'll remember this in a few years! :)
ReplyDeletewhen i first took savannah to see the movie, i fell apart when the dad told mulan ...The flower that blooms in adversity is the most rare and beautiful of all....i knew that was a word of encouragement for a little girl with out a daddy....mulan is awesome!
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet and intentional decision you have made as a mom. Great job.
ReplyDeleteFondly,
