And The Stockings Were Hung By The Chimney With Care...

Martha made these stockings out of old handkerchiefs, sweaters and it looks like pajamas.
Pure Genius.
I pulled our stockings out today while we were spreading the Christmas cheer and remembered my dilemma.
We don't have a mantel in this house!

Where do you hang stockings when you don't have a mantel?

  1. Martha is so crafty and I think her website is, hands down, my favorite place to go for holiday inspiration! I don't have a mantle either and instead have my stockings suspended from snowflake stocking hooks (mine are from Target but I've seen them all over) on my bookshelves. They're right next to the tree we put up today and look great beside the twinkling Christmas lights! Good luck finding a special spot for stockings in your home!

  2. You need a stocking stand. Get hubby to build you one!

  3. Lovely inspiration! Old ladders would be awesome, hanging them going down each step, also down your staircase if you have one! Hmm what else, oh ya you can hang them on the tree and get double the duty for the tree. Good luck friend! lulu

  4. I so wish I had a fireplace mantel!!!
My hubby built a floating shelf that hangs above the couch(its almost the entire length
of the couch)..I use it as a faux mantle..Its perfect for stockings!!

  5. LOVE those sweater stockings!! I don't have a mantle either, and I usually hang my stockings from an oversized mirror in my living room.

I love Jen's idea of the floating mantle too!

  6. You could maybe hang them on a staircase. I like that photo of the knitted stockings with the sequins. Fun!

  7. We DO have a mantel but I love to hang them on the staircase below all my greenery. It's perfect there and they don't get too hot from the fire.

  8. Pretty stockings! We hang ours on the fireplace screen because I don't want to mess up the new mantel! We just take them down if we start a fire!

  9. You could hang them on a shelf or even on that pretty dresser you put your new lamps on! I know you'll think of something.

By the way, I was at an adorable antique store last week, and found some old distressed wooden black shutters. I thought of you and hung them on each side of our family room window. LOVE it!!! They don't cover the full lenth, so I just hung them on the lower half. Thanks for the inspiration! I loved that idea as soon as I saw it.

  10. Do you have a staircase? That might be cool:) I just saw some stockings that were white with black letters. I wanted them bad...but resisted.

  11. If you have a ba, hang them on the end. Yeah, shutters would be great!

  13. I was walking around with the stockings today trying to find a place to hang them.....we have a fireplace but use it all the time and the stockings will be constantly coming down if I put them on the mantle. I love this idea of putting them on the end of the bed! Love those sweater stockings that you pictured.

  14. I think they should go on the mirror in the dinning room...or hang from the shelf in the tv room...or on each kiddos door..I am putting mine on our door over our couch...hard with no mantel or stairs...or room:) Can't wait to see the even more beautified residence!

  15. Staircase - I also saw a cute photo with them on a piano. How about over a doorway?

  16. We hang garland down the corner of one wall and hang the stockings from that. (including the dogs stockings)=P We used to hang them from the banister in our old house. Around a door way is another idea (attached to the pine garland)Maybe the doorway between your dining room and kitchen? trying to remember exactly what it looked like. You've got the artistic eyeballs! You'll see it! =)

  17. We have a mantel but sometimes I hang them on the back of our chairs where we each eat. I also hang extras on doorknobs and on bedposts. I have one on a hook in the guest bath. You can put greenery or an old toy in them. I have them all over the house. We only hang 2 on the mantle now that our kids are grown.
