pure delight.

                       source found here

Does anything say Fall better than Apple Pie?
I'm trying girls.
I'm trying my best to hold off a few more days in bringing out my Fall decor.
If my busy life had permitted me, it would have been done two weeks ago, but it didn't.
We've had school and birthday parties and retreats with college students and on and on and on.
The only thing I've managed to pull out is my mulled cider candle.
Oh, how I love my Fall candles.
That sweet thing has been lit morning, noon and night.
And, I'm not even kidding.

Our One Stop Shop and a birthday party.

This is our home office, if you wanna call it that.
It's where I sit, when I get a chance, and blog.
It's where we do our bills.
It houses all of our records in the bottom filing cabinet drawer.
It has our printer to the right in that big pull down cabinet.
It's where I keep all of our note cards and birthday cards.
And, it's where I put the things that are inspiring me.
I also keep all of our markers, crayons, and colored pencils and paint brushes on top in the box my grandfather made so many years ago.
We picked up this computer desk/home office "one stop shop" at the Pottery Barn Outlet in North Georgia.

Centsational Girl is having a party at her place where you can see where everyone else does their blogging!

 __________________________________________________________________________________

I also wanted to show you some pictures from our birthday party this weekend.
Our middle son turned 8, and we had a blast celebrating our boy who is filled with absolute JOY!  I asked  him what he wanted to do for his party, and he said he wanted a pool party.  I was happy to give it to him because it's one of the easiest parties you can throw!  We did pizza, cake and icecream.  I had treatbags filled with every kind of candy and gum  under the sun...cause kids love candy!  And, I took pictures while the kids took turns doing their favorite jumps into the pool.  I gotta tell ya...kids love it when you take pictures of them making a big splash in the water.  They went back and forth from the pool to the playground at least 15 times, and I'm pretty sure I sent every one of them home ready for a good night's sleep!
Oh!  I almost forgot.  The kids' favorite thing in the treatbag was the pair of nasty teeth that I gave to each of them...we had to get a picture of the group with their teeth in...and it was a sight for sore eyes!  They laughed and laughed and laughed at funny each of them looked!

August is Yellow.

 Source: here

Yellow is definitely August.
Bright yellow.
Then, sometime in September, the bright yellow turns to mustard yellow.
Orange ushers in October.
And, then brown becomes November.
December is special, it gets green and red.
January is blue.
February is hot pink for me.
March is green with new growth.
April is a pastel Easter egg.
May blooms in all the colors of the rainbow.
June is turquoise.
July is red, white and blue.
And August is definitely bright yellow.

Please tell me that I'm not the only one that sees each month in colors.

Before and Afters, Part two.

Before and Afters, Part one can be found here.

Our foyer.  Before.

Have you ever seen anything like this?
{apologies for anyone who lived here and loved it}
That was a tile floor that some pour soul had to hammer out.
Cedar boards with mirrors.
enough said.

Our foyer.  After

The beveled glass in the windows, the cedar planks with slanted mirrors and the tile floor all got replaced.

The walls got painted a color that looked great on the swatch but waytooyellow in reality.
So, after living with the color for two years, we finally re-painted a few weeks ago.
{We, as in my husband, painted a few weeks ago}
It's a light and airy color from Benjamin Moore. {Monroe Bisque HC 26}

Our living room.  Before.

more cedar planks on the walls.
carpet that was extremely lived on.
red walls.  I love red, but these had to go.  I  prefer a brownish red...a little more earthy.

Our living room. After.

I thought I'd give you a few different angles of the room.
There was a wall straight in front of the foyer, and you couldn't see into the dining room.
We had the wall taken out in the renovation process, and I'm so glad we did!
It allows the room to be one big open space, and I don't mind it at all.
It doesn't look like there would be enough walking space between the dining room chairs and the sofa,
but I promise there is.

Things on the to-do list....
New lamps on the red chest ...I am completely over the ones on there.
Pillows , Pillows, Pillows.  I vow to buy more pillows this year and pray my children don't ruin them.
A weathered frame around the cow painting...
A nice, big, fabulous floor lamp where the small table is beside the sofa. {see it in the first picture...}

Our Dining Room.  Before.

This is the only angle that I have of the dining room before.  It's more like a shot of the living room, but you can see where the dining room is.  You can't really see the wall in front of the foyer, but you can see how much darker it is in the room.

Our dining room.  After.

I should have done these before and after posts way before now.
They've helped me to appreciate this house and the transformation that has taken place!

It also helps to see places that need attention.
{Like those windows in the living room}.
I can't figure out what I want to do, so I haven't done anything in two years.
When I see pictures of the room, I realize that they need something...so I'll set my mind to making it happen!

Next up in this little before and after series....our kitchen.

Before and Afters, Part one.

Here's a recap for those of you who might be here for the first time...
We moved to Orlando two years ago this past June because my husband took a job as a campus pastor.
A parsonage came with the position, which is a home given to some pastors to live in.

I saw it once when my husband interviewed for the position, and it had college students living in it at the time.
Needless to say, it's not ours, and we can't do exactly what we'd do to it if it were,
But, you'll never hear me complaining because there were major renovations done before we moved in.

{thank you, God.}

It's been six months since I started blogging, and I realized that I've never shown you before and afters.
So, while I'm waiting on the Fall weather to show up, I thought I'd show you a few rooms.

The picture above is our family room.
When you walk in our front door, you can walk through an open doorway into our family room
It is as open as you can get to our kitchen. They're basically just one big room.

The house was in bad shape, so it was going to get a makeover regardless of whether we took the job.
I'm just grateful that we were hired in time to get in on a couple of the decisions.
Basically, we were able to ask for fake hardwood floors, and we were able to choose paint colors.

Fake hardwoods because the other option was tile throughout, and I'm not a "tile throughout" kind of gal.
Real hardwoods weren't in the budget for the church doing the renovations, so I got the next best thing. fake.

The problem with choosing paint colors in a house you've only seen once is that the color can possibly be a great color on a swatch, but when it goes on the wall, it can look completely different.
This was the case, of course, with the color that I picked out.
It turned out way too yellow for my liking due to all the sunlight from the many windows in this house.
My husband actually repainted a few weekends ago to a more neutral color, and we like it so much better!

Below is a picture of what we've done with it.

We moved from a much more spacious house, so we had to make our furniture work.

This would be the reason that our sofa is in front of the huge bay window.
We've stayed up all hours of the night trying to find a better way, and there isn't one.
This is our version of "making lemonade out of lemons!"

We had a Berber rug in the room, but our sweet little 6 month old Yorkie, Max, ruined it.
I'd never trade the rug for him...he's essentially our fourth child.
There are a ton of windows in the house, which is a great problem to have.
The downside to it is that we have a boat load of books, so our solution was the shelf above the window.

The only thing I really want to do in this room is add one of Pottery Barn's chippy-white, chunky floor lamps.
And, some more pillows to the sofas.  Merry Christmas to me, hopefully.

This is the chest on the wall opposite the black armoir.
Do you see that very boring creamy pillow?
It used to have three buttons across it until my dog child or one of my three human children destroyed it.
pardon the imperfections.
Nester says it doesn't have to be perfect to be beautiful, so I'm going with it.

Well, that's it for the first before and after.
We love this home even though it isn't ours.
It's actually been very freeing to live in a home that we can't change.
Being content with what you have and making the most out of it when you have to is essential to growing up. Right?
I think that might mean I'm officially grown up.

Next up...
the foyer, dining room and living room, which are all part of another big open space.
it is called the living room, right?
the one with no tv.

No sign of Fall.

 source found here

You know those plans I had to decorate for Fall this weekend.
Yeah.
I totally forgot that my husband had a leadership retreat with our college students.
So, I held down the fort with my three kiddos and organized all of my scrapbook stuff.
When I get a free minute {yeah right} I can finally get caught up.
The picture of the beautiful kitchen window has absolutely nothing to do with Fall.
I just saw it and loved it and wished for the day when I have a window that opens out into the world.

A Brother's Love.

Do any of you ever go to Nester's files
She posted about them today, and so I went to check them out.
This picture caught my eye, and before I knew it, I was reading this family's story.
Well, as this family puts it...God's story for their family.
The people in the picture up above are Shannon & Ryan Arnold and Chad & Christine Arnold.
Chad had end-stage liver disease and needed a live donor.
His brother, Ryan, was a match.
The picture up above was taken on the morning of the surgery.
In interviews before the surgery, both brothers were overwhelmed with love for one another.
The  hospital removed 2/3 of Ryan's liver first and then transplanted it into Chad's very sick body.
Everyone was relieved that they both made it through surgery successfully.
Tragically, a few short days later, Ryan had complications and died.

This is Ryan, Shannon & their three boys for a family Christmas picture.

You can follow Chad's continued story here.

I'm encouraged and challenged by this family's faith, and I know you will be, too.

It's never too early, right?

source:  Pottery Barn

I know that Fall {officially} begins on September 22, 2010 at 11:09 pm, according to these smart people
But, there is just no way that I'm waiting another month.

It's my favorite season of the whole  year, and I like to see it for as long as I can.
Besides, we live in Orlando, so the only way I can celebrate the season is by creating it inside my home!

I usually start with:
the front door wreath,
my apothocary jars filled with Fall goodness,
our small Fall flag that welcomes the season with some new annual plants in the planters,
my apple cider candles burning all hours of the day,
our large University of Georgia football flag flying from the front of the house with pride,
the dining room table set for Fall,
and gourds and pumpkins in every place that I can justify putting them!

So, when am I starting all of this Fall nesting?  This weekend!

Eat Your Vegetables.

I made Eggplant Parmesan for dinner, and It was delicious.
So delicious that one of my sweet children threw it up in his plate after the first bite.
I grew up eating whatever my mom cooked.
The end.  End of Story.
There was no crying.
There was no complaining.
And, let me just tell you, there was no throwing up in my plate.

This might not be a big deal to some moms, but it is to me.
I want my kids to eat what I cook and be grateful for it.
I don't want to serve tacos, pizza, and hot dogs seven nights a week.
I want them to eat their vegetables.
It's not enough that they eat enough fruit to feed the army and drink enough water everyday to fill a bathtub.
I.want.them.to.eat.their.vegetables.
fresh vegetables.
I just can't imagine that this is too much to ask of my kids.
seriously.

I will fix Eggplant Parmesan again, and it will be served to everyone.

This is one of those nights when I probably just need to put my pajamas on and go.to.bed.

Did I mention that he was sweet?
Did I tell you how grateful he is for so many things in his life, other than vegetables?

okayyyyyyy. I think I'm done for now.
sweet dreams~

Some Crayons, a Coloring book and a Brand New Friend.

Our family met the most precious person this past week.
Bao Yuyan came over for dinner at our house, and as far as I know, she survived.
She's a new student at University of Central Florida, and she just arrived from Beijing, China.
She might just be the tiniest person I've ever seen.
I think if she stretched real tall, she could possibly be 4'11 and soaking wet, she might weigh 90 pounds.
Let's just say we felt a little like giants.

Lydia, our daughter, was beyond thrilled to spend time with her, and
I don't  think there was a single toy in our house that didn't get showcased for our new friend.
I think the most exciting thing for Lydia was teaching her what to do with her crayons and coloring book.
It was such a sweet and needed lesson for my kids to learn that she had never colored before in her life.
Even with our best attempts, our kids are still overwhelmed with materialism.
We hope this was the first of many special times we will spend getting to know Bao Yuyan.
There is a special place in our hearts for this sweet girl.
And, I have a strong suspicion that there are more lessons in store.

Simple Living...

source: Here

The husband and I sat out on our screened in porch this morning
trying, with every ounce of life in us,
to have a conversation without constant interruption.
{Thank you God for my first cup of coffee that prohibited such constant interruption from driving me over the edge}
We like to dream together,
and it seems that time together on our back porch, is the perfect place for doing just that...dreaming together.
 Simple Living...
that's what we talk about most often.
This season of life in Orlando has been such a reprieve for us.
A time for slowing down.
A time for figuring out what really brings our family JOY.
A time with little to no distraction.
This season won't last forever, but the fruit that is harvested from it will.
I'm blown away at how our dreams have changed in the last two years.
Everything has come into clear focus.
  John 10:10
Jesus came to give us life and he intended our lives to be full and abundant.

The School Bells are Ringing....

I'm so excited for this school year with my kids.
I feel like I have such a better handle on what the year will look like.
My personality tends to lean towards accomplishing the tasks,
so I am going into this year challenging myself like nobody's business to take time for...
long nature walks, bike rides, and built in fun.
I want to be more intentional about taking time to build legos with Luke and Seth.
I want to decorate {and re-decorate} Lydia's dollhouse
and dress her little polly pockets until my fingers bleed!
The thing that inspires me the most about the Classical Approach is...
there are immense amounts of reading that should be done together and this time is so good to
cultivate amazing conversation and learning...these moments are priceless to me.
I'm amazed at how much more my kids are inspired to learn and grow and stretch their minds
when I am sitting with them...willing to learn with them
and not just forcing them to accomplish the tasks at hand.
The very thing that I love the most can sometimes be the hardest.
It's going to take effort and commitment on my part to stay focused on the important things

I was so excited when I saw
Angie from Bring the Rain had given us a chance to spill the beans on what we're going to be learning this year with our kids...
I know that I don't have a ton of readers who homeschool,
so for those of you not so interested in this part of my life...I'll post on my love for decorating asap.

I don't like ordering all of my curriculum from one source.
It's more expensive, and I don't like putting all of my eggs in one basket.
There are way too many books out there that I love teaching from to order from just one single company.
So, with that said...my curriculum is all over the place...a little bit like this blog.

I {heart} Peacock Blue

So a long while ago, Edie over at Life in Grace, which is on my short list of favorite blogs
showed us all her love for Peacock Blue in her post found here
I swore right then and there that somehow, someday I'd find a way to get that color in my house.
This past week, we spruced up our daughter's room and found ways to add this blessed color to her room.
We made her a new/old headboard,  a new/old corkboard, and we fancied up her lamps a little.
The headboard...
My husband came home a couple of weeks ago with a ton of old louver doors that he found for free.
He cut the doors in half, painted/distressed them and hinged them together before attaching them to the wall.
 The Corkboard...
I found a huge old empty frame at a garage sale and paid $7 for it.
My husband painted & distressed it that perfect creamy white.
He cut a piece of plywood and fit it into the frame and then we glued the cork down on it.
We had the plywood and the cork was from Joann's Fabric store for $10.
The Lamps...
I bought the lamps about a month ago at Old Time Pottery for $10 each.
While I was at Joann's I picked up some large buttons and hot glued them to the lamp shades.
I think I spent about $3 on the buttons.
The only other thing that we need to do is pick up some white panels for her windows.
I plan to add a Peacock blue pom-pom trim from Joann's to the inside edge of the panels.
I'll post pics when I complete that project....
I love her room..the colors make me so happy that I find myself taking phone calls back there
or reading while laying on her big, comfy, white, fluffy bed.
Most of the accessories in the room either came from Target, TJ Maxx or garage sales.
I love when a plan comes together on the cheap!!

CoLoR mE hApPy

These pictures made my heart happy when I saw them.
I can always count on Suzie Beezie to provide me with the best "pick me up" pictures.

We're in the middle of some pretty major projects over here at our house.
It all started with some old louver doors that my husband found on the side of the road
and my love for Peacock Blue and our need for a  headboard in our daughter's room.

Projects always start out small and end up massive with us.
We finished the headboard and then decided that we needed to spruce up her lamps.
Before I knew it, we had found a huge fancy frame to paint and distress.
I'm not sure what makes the room more fabulous...the headboard or the corkboard or the lamps.
I'm just thrilled to finally have that blessed color in her room...it's amazing, so thanks Edie for the inspiration!

We got Lydia's room basically finished, when we got the brilliant idea to paint the whole interior of our house.
I've said before...this is not our house....
it's a parsonage that we live in while my husband serves as a campus pastor here in Orlando.
The house was renovated before we moved in,  but some of the details weren't exactly my favorites.
After many encouraging posts from Nester, I decided it was okay to make it what we want while we're here.
{A little paint never hurt anything, right?}

My husband worked for about 8 hours finishing two huge rooms before we realized...
that we just didn't like the color.
I know. We're idiots who learn things the hard way.
So, after we laughed hysterically absolutely lost our minds...
we headed back to the paint store to find another color.

I can't wait to show you the finished project next week..
wish us luck!

Pray with me.

I've tried to post all week.  My boys are in Georgia with my parents, so I've had more time than usual.
but, it's been one of those weeks around here.
I can't possibly show you what's been inspiring me for my home
or show you the new headboard that we've finished for my daughter's room.
I don't want to show you what I did to spruce up her lamps or the old/new cork board I made for her.
There's no way that I can let myself tell you what I'll be teaching my kids this year in homeschool
or give you some of the recipes that I'm dying to make for our family.

I can't go forward until I ask you to pray for a family in our church that is now going through something
inconceivable.

There was a horrible tragedy last weekend.
An older couple from our church took their three grown children, along with their families,
on a family vacation together.
It was the first time that they were all able to be together in several years.
They'd spent the most perfect family time at the beach all day doing all the things they love most.
The dad, with his three grown sons, went to a late night movie and never returned home.
One of the wives woke up in the middle of the night and realized that her husband wasn't there.
As the women sat worried, they eventually found out from the morning news that all four men had been killed.
They were hit by a drunk driver on the way back to the beach house after the movie.
Just like that.  Everything about this family is changed forever.
I have felt burdened for these women and filled with deep sorrow for their unimaginable loss.

Would you join me in praying for the McConnell family?
Pray for unexplainable Peace.
And, for much needed calm through this storm.
Pray that God, who is more than able, will give them every single thing they need in this hour.

Psalm 23
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
he restores my soul,
He guides me in paths of righteousness
for his name's sake.
Even though I walk
through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

I have a strong faith in God, and I trust that in the midst of tragedy, he will make all things good.
But, when something like this happens, my world is rocked.
I look at my husband and my three children..
my brother and his family...
my parents
and all of my friends and their families..
and I can't help but wonder if I will ever stand in the shoes that those women are now standing in.
My mind goes to that unspeakable place
where I try to imagine for just a minute my life changing so drastically.
in an instant.
I've spent time this week praying for this family..for these widows and for the two children that lost fathers.
I pondered whether or not to share with you,
and I decided to because this is real life.
You can pray for this family and you can be reminded, with me..
to honor your life..
to love your family a little harder...
and to trust God deeply in times when you don't understand.
