An Ode to the Eighties.

                              source found here

I miss so many things about the great eighties.
I think it's on my mind because this May, I will have been out of high school TWENTY years.
Where in the world has time gone?
I got my first email a couple of weeks ago about the dates and times of the reunion,
and I can't wait to see everyone!

Join me on my little stroll down memory lane....

~The Clothes~
Leg Warmers.
The swatch watches all the way up my arm.
The acid wash jeans that were rolled up so tight at the bottom that it nearly cut off my circulation.
The sam & libby flats in every color.
Stir up pants.
Long sweaters over those stir up pants.
Jelly Shoes also in every color.
Friendship bead necklaces with those tacky clasps.
Guess Jeans.
Neon Clothes.
Sebago shoes.

Big earrings.
and gigantic hair.

Tell me you aren't gonna have those songs in your mind all day now.
I think I need a marathon movie weekend with some of my favorites.
and just for the record...
I watched sixteen candles seventeen times just to say I did.

My friends and I had a slumber party at Denise Franklin's house in junior high,
and we hit rewind too many times to count in the volleyball scene of Top Gun.

Edited to add my favorite outfit from united colors of benetton.
Please take notice of the hair, the gold jewelry and the purple sam & libby flats.
You will be happy to know that I kept the Aussie hair product company in business.

  3. I miss the 80's!!! What a great time to be a teenager!!! Although I was a teen in the 90's, I was in love with 80's clothes, mall bangs, and swatch watches (and phones for that matter) Our poor kids will never have such quality!! LOL!!! Great post!!!

  5. Tara, this post gave me chills! As weird as the 80's decade was, it was fun to be a part of it. I used to work for Esprit...and have big hair...and ride around with Prince blasting on the radio. Thanks for the walk down memory lane.

  8. You nailed the eighties! The only addition I can think of is Howard Jones.

I rewinded that same scene a billion times (before school each morning), while eating my toast and pears.

My friends and I also rewinded the Dirty Dancing scene (the one where they're dancing and she jumps into his arms) a million times. Had to keep that movie on the d.l. though because I wasn't aloud to see it. :D

  9. oh my goodness, this was so funny! i remember ALL of this, only i think you're my sister's age and i'm a bit younger! But, I was up in all of it, too. i wanted to be just like her! ;)

  10. I remember some of these things but only vaguely - I was born in the 80s, so my trip down memory lane would have to walk through the 90s!

By the way, found you in the comments of Flower Patch Farmgirl today, and I absolutely love the song you're playing. Seems just right to stumble upon this place and hear it on her day of bravery.

  11. It's been twenty years for me too! I had forgotten most of these things though...I just watched St. Elmos fire this weekend and still loved it! It's fun to think back the era to the era that shaped us...I couldn't get my jeans tight enough...I would safety pin them in the back! yuck.
Have fun at your reunion. It's a hoot to see how people change.
    Love your new banner ~

  12. Thanks for making me smile this a.m....I needed it! You are too cute with your cute little outfit and big hair ;) You have to know that my favorite pair of shoes were purple with a big teal palm tree on them...and of course my Sam & Libbys! Oh and my prom dress was purple sequined from top to bottom!! Holy Moly was I a sight...haha!

Makes me want to go and look back at pics :)

  15. Hahah! I remember all those!! I still leg warmers! :) I am cold! :) Breakfast Club is still one of the best movies too!! My 20th is next year, I can't wait!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Oh...the big hair. I used to set my hair with orange juice cans, then use a bottle of hairspray on it! The leg warmers were hugely popular. You really brought back some great memories!

    XO,
    Jane

  17. 24 years here, baby. Can't say I miss much of it (except Reagan being president, perhaps!). Fun post!

  19. This is toooo funny! Esprit and Def Leopard took me back:). But you forgot U2! Yes, this May it'll be 20 years for me, too. However, I haven't even thought of it until now. As you can tell, I don't miss the 80's and I don't miss High School. Some things, like tightly rolled jeans, I'm just so glad to move on from:).

  20. This was great! I am so psyched that leg warmers are back in (ok I can't pull them off, but I can force my kids to wear them!).

    How fun.

  21. Although I did not go, my 20th HS reunion was last year. I too took the same trip down 80's memory lane! I miss 80's music!!

  22. Oh this is so classic. I can relate to it all. Well, all except the big hair. I couldn't do it. There wasn't enough Aqua Net on this earth that could help my flat, thin hair. I tried like crazy to do the big hair, but that never worked. I did, however, accomplish the big bangs thing.
By the way...who was your favorite in the Top Gun movie? Mine had to be Ice Man or Slider (Val Kilmer or Rick Rosovich). Loved that movie.
Thanks for the trip down "good memory lane".

  23. What a post!!! Love it! And yes, now I've got some old favorites Playing in my head! Remember that song, "Who's Johnny? They say. And try and look the other way?" That was one of my faves, but no idea who sang it. A one hit wonder probably. I went to quite a few concerts in the 80s...Lionel Ritchie, Madonna, Cindy Lauper, INXS, The Bangles, Michael Jackson, Boy George...all because my mom loved going. :)

Can't believe that picture of you! You were a total 80s babe!

    Love ya...like,totally to the max!

    Great post!

    Natasha.

  26. My 25th is coming up soon. So hard to believe the '80's were such a long time ago. Your list took me back too. I think you, me and every other teen kept Aussie in business. I still use some the products.

  27. well this was just plain FUN! Now if only I could attach a picture of myself - I belive I could find one that encompasses at least half of the clothes list. Now there's a linky idea for you.... :) Love your post with the quotes too. I like to jot differnt ones down on the chalk board in the playroom. Even if just to remind myself! It's almost Friday!! xo, Tess

  28. fashion police! fashion police!!!

    what are you wearing??? ha!

you forgot one major aspect of the 80s. final net! so that we could keep those bangs standing straight up.

    ReplyDelete
  29. You forgot to mention that you were, without a doubt, beautiful! Of course, you still are. I can still remember all those Friday afternoons with you, Shelley, and Jenn. I would watch y'all very carefully to see how you could get your hair that big. Oh......and the Raider cheerleading uniforms. So fun!

  32. OH TARA! I love this post!! You were just as beautiful with big hair as you are now. I swear the height on my license is 2" taller than I really am because my hair was so big in high school when I first starting driving! MY hands used to get so tired from SCRUNCHING my permed hair to make it bigger. Oh and the curling iron - I spent hundreds of hours of my life with that thing! "Pour some sugar on me"...that's going to be in my head all day! Funny, funny. Have a great weekend!

  33. Love your new header! Julie in Holland :)

  34. I love it!!! Oh my gosh all the memories just came flooding back...I wore it all, had the perm, braces, jelly shoes...this is hilarious. My picture would look very similar but add lots of black eyeliner!!!

  35. I absolutely loved Esprit clothes then! I think it was all I bought.
Jelly shoes for sure, big poofed up perm.
It is funny now when my kids will hear some song from then and love it!
    Have a great weekend

  36. This made me laugh! I wasn't cool enough for some of it (Benetton, for example), but the big hair I nailed! :) The eighties cannot be beat for its music!

  37. How serendipity is this.

Found your blog google searching for 80's songs for a post I did today on the 80's.

    I LOVE your blog.

    Very nice, thank you, Universe.
