i read it in three days flat and loved every page of it.
it's one of those books that you don't want to end.
you want her to keep telling her story...what it's like to live life as a good girl and what a prison it is.
her story is my story.
different characters. different scenarios. different plot.
same story.
same story.
i'd finish a chapter and think it was my favorite.
until i got finished with the next chapter.
i'm not kidding. you will love this book.
if you're reading these words and you are saying to yourself, "no way, i wasn't a good girl."
don't fret...the book is for you, too.
some of us spend the better part of our lives being good girls,
and some of us spend our lives trying to make up for when we weren't good girls at all.
..that any attempt we make at looking the part is just that...a vain attempt.
..that any attempt we make at looking the part is just that...a vain attempt.
hopefully, prayerfully, we get to the point where we realize we aren't good without Christ.
...and we accept his unconditional, grace-filled love and acceptance, and we live free.
...free from the prison of "trying" to be a good girl..pretending to be all things to all people.
...free from the prison of "trying" to make up for all the times we weren't good girls at all.
as emily puts it...free from the "try hard life."
she talks about being all things to all people.
she talks about always being the strong, responsible one.
she talks about being the rule follower.
she talks about hiding behind
our acts of service, our fake "fine", our good reputations, our comfort zones, and our indifference.
and praise God, she also talks about being seen and found by God, the one who made us.
she talks about
responding to him, receiving him, and remaining in him.
she reminds us that we are safe in Him in each and every circumstance of our lives,
even when we don't "feel" very safe.
i don't know about you, but the "try hard" life is entirely exhausting.
i've been there, done that, and I'm wearing the t-shirt, carrying the crown and toting the trophy.
there are all kinds of prisons that can hold us captive, but i know this performance prison
all too well.
you will love every word of every paragraph of every chapter.
there won't be a single one that you will want to rush through.
you will be reminded of the priceless truth about finding your identity and worth in Christ alone.
you will find freedom in letting go of the work hard and try hard life.
and this much is worth repeating.
remember when i said this book is for the quintessential good girls
and
for those who are trying hard to make up for all the times they weren't good girls at all?
it's so, so, so true.
I love it so much that I am thrilled to be giving one copy away!
