My Closet
His closet
Lydia's closet
Luke & Seth's closet
My husband is home with us this week, and we're tackling a few major projects together.
Our first one was cleaning out and organizing all the bedroom closets.
I am super excited that we made the switch from plastic hangers to wooden hangers.
The short story is that our church used to be a clothing store and there were thousands of them!
It took almost an entire day to get them all done, but we did it, and they look great.
I took all of the kids clothes that don't fit anymore to a really nice consignment shop in town.
And, I'll take my husbands and mine to the nearest Goodwill.
I went ahead and put it all in my car, so it won't sit in my bedroom floor.
Here are my tricks to organizing our closets....
1. Create a Clean Slate
Take everything out and go through all your clothes to see what works and what doesn't work.
It's not rocket science, but it seriously helps to eliminate all those items you really just don't wear.
I don't do this more than two times per year,
but it sure helps make those quick run throughs once a month more doable.
2. Organize Clothes
There are a lot of ways you can organize your closet, but the main thing is that it works for you.
I've tried the color coded system, and I didn't like it.
I prefer putting all of my "like items" together.
{jeans, casual pants, dress pants, shorts, skirts, short sleeves, long sleeves, etc...}
3. Store your shoes
There's no "best" way to do it, but the important thing is that
you know what you have & you help them last as long as possible.
I personally keep all of my shoes stored in the boxes they came in.
My husband prefers to keep his lined up by pair on the bottom of his closet.
Knowing where your shoes are saves time and stress in the mornings!
4. Group Sweaters together by color in top of closet
It helps you quickly grab the color that you need.
They last longer when they're folded.
I prefer them in my closet because if they're tucked in a drawer, they tend to be neglected and not worn.
Closets organized.
Chest of drawers cleaned out.
Christmas taken down.
Toys sorted and re-organized.
Feels good!
Won't last very long, but it feels sooooo good right now.
Are you cleaning out and organizing this week?
{thankful for}
226. a husband who likes organization as much as I do.
227. my mom's lung infection clearing up, finally.
228. the current episode of The Office that we're watching...hilarious.

You have inspired me to clean my closets!! Thank you!!
ReplyDeleteI really need to work on my closet. AND purchase new hangers!
ReplyDeleteI've been purging around here too and went back and straightened out my closet. I put everything in color together and it has been working out well for me. I do have a lot of black though!
ReplyDeleteI toTALlY did this today!!!! This so makes me laugh.. my man is home this week too and we are making our goodwill pile as I type! LOL
ReplyDeleteWe have not started organizing and cleaning out yet, but I am about to die to get started! Love the feeling of things being organized and in order :)
ReplyDeleteSince we recently moved, my husband and I cleaned out our closets as well. Isn't it the best feeling in the world? I love it. A clean slate is exactly right :]

I love a clean closet! I try to clean mine out at least once every couple months!
ReplyDeleteWe too are doing the same. This year I started in December. I feel better starting early, I can't handle the pressure of resolutions in January. LOL, I even started working out months ago, took a month of and started again in December. Seems to be working well this year.
ReplyDeleteyay for clean closets
ReplyDelete& holy cow, am i ever coveting your plethora of wooden hangers! ;)
Looks awesome and now I am inspired....as soon as we get back from the poconos Christmas comes down and organization begins!!! Happy New Year...cause you know that kind of thing...:]
ReplyDeleteOnce I get all of my Christmas decor packed up (it's currently piled high on my dining room table!) I'm headed straight to the bedrooms to organize. My #1 resolution for 2012 is to finally get our master bedroom into shape. I'm so embarassed when friends/family come upstairs and see our big walk in closet of a bedroom, it's quite scary!
ReplyDeleteBravo on those closets and happy 2012 to you and your sweet family Tara.
xo~

Yay for you! I always try to keep mine nice and organized so it doesn't get out of control. I arrange things by sleeve length and then within each group by color. We had cabinets made for our closets a few years ago and it's the best thing I ever did. I always tell me husband that that will be thing that sells this house someday.
ReplyDeleteI'm totally done taking down our Christmas decorations inside the house. We still need to take the lights down outside. We're in the process of cleaning out the girl's closets. It's that time of year!
ReplyDeleteI haven't organized a thing since October {card season took over, then just plain tired}, but looking at your clean closets might inspire me! :) I switched to wooden hangers last year and love that things aren't jammed as tightly together {you can't fit as many wooden hangers as you can plastic in a closet}. Haven't made the switch for my girls, but good idea.

thanks for the tips! believe it or not, everytime I clean out our closet... the hubs just finds more "stuff" to store in there. ;o)
ReplyDeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteNew follower. Love your posts! Look forward to them.
Have a wonderful 2012!
Claudia
they look fantastic! something i could do for sure! i'm going to start cleaning up a bit of Christmas first and probably wait til the kids go back to tackle some other things! enjoy the weekend! susan
ReplyDeleteJust dropped off 3 bags of clothes to GW, I put them in my car too and today when I went to do errands I dropped them off! It does feel good!
ReplyDeleteI am pretty picky about my closet. I use all pink hangers (huggable hangers from HSN) that hold the clothes and don't let them fall off. My husband has blue. I organize by color and item. Like all grey shirts together and all jeans together. Sweaters folded too. I love to organize. My craft closet needs it. I have to get the Christmas down then I am doing it.
ReplyDeleteJust starting to organize. Have finished my daughter's room and will tackle my son's today. There is so much to go through and so much they have outgrown in the time we have been gone. Hoping to get it to a good place before al of our boxes come from the island and have to be unpacked. Thanks for the tips and motivation!
ReplyDeleteLove your hangers! They make for a beautiful closet!
ReplyDeleteDe-clutter your closet. Take out everything from your closet and start labeling your items: keepers and giveaways. It is not healthy to keep items that you no longer use for a long time. Not only do these things clutter your closet but it may also attract bugs and pests into your closet. So instead of keeping them, give them away to charity.
ReplyDeleteWhere did you find the wooden hangers for kids clothes?
